Sur les Routes de l'Ardéchoise : Les Sucs

Onwards and updwards... Les Sucs section marks the highest summit of the Ardéchoise course. The natural landscape is shaped by volcanoes that appear even more imposing due to the vast open spaces in between. A hash mountainous land which lays claim to Le Mézenc, the highest peak in Ardèche. A sporting challenge running almost equitably along the Atlantic and Mediterranean slopes, this circuit boasts some beautiful scenery, superb panaromic views over the Alpine range and, of course, typical mountain villages.

profil étape parcours les Sucs

L'Ecole du Vent in Saint Clément is an extraordinary tourist venue. Half museum, half school, it covers a range of actitivies linked to wind and flight. Fun, interesting and instructive, it's well worth a visit.

Initially, Les Sucs follows the same route as the Volcanique circuit, as far as the famous Gerbier de Jonc, From there, go straight on to the Mont Mézenc ,circumnavigating it to the west until you reach Les Estables. Next you make a brief foray into the Haute-Loire, crossing back and forth across the dividing line between the Atlantique and Mediterranean slopes. On a clear day, you can pick out the volcanic mounts of the Aigoual, the Puy de Sancy, the Plomb du Cantal and the Puy de Dome. The Croix de Boutières ridge brings you back into Ardèche. Cross the Boutières circle with its impenetrable views, marmots, broom and fireweed. After Saint-Clément, the basalt cliffs mark the start of a very pretty descent through wild countryside. The sucs disappear rapidly behind you, then above Chanéac, the peaks reappear as you clamber up the Ardéchoise ridge. Finally you arrive in Saint-Martial.
